The 5 best playgrounds in San Francisco

SF playgrounds with unique features

And bonus ideas for making a day of it

San Francisco has no shortage of amazing playgrounds, but these five are my absolute favorites. They’re beautiful, clean, and packed with interesting features that make them stand out from the rest. Bonus: I love doubling up on an adventure by pairing each playground with a nearby activity—because why not make a whole day of it?

Of course, I know there are way more than five great playgrounds in the city (seriously, SF is a playground paradise). If you’re looking for even more spots to explore, check out my full Google map linked below.

Presidio Tunnel Tops

210 Lincoln Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94129

WHY I LOVE IT: MASSIVE PLAYGROUND, WATER FEATURES, FOOD TRUCKS, FIELD STATION

This isn’t your average playground—it’s an adventure in nature. Perfect for kids ages 2-12, the Outpost at Presidio Tunnel Tops lets little ones swing, slide, crawl, and climb their way through a space inspired by the outdoors. Highlights include exploring the inside of a giant fallen tree and splashing around water features modeled after historic water channels.

Bonus: The fun doesn’t stop at the playground. Just steps away, you’ll find the Field Station, a magical space with hands-on exhibits about the natural world. And if all that play works up an appetite, food trucks rotate daily, offering delicious eats from a variety of cuisines. Or, head to Il Parco for focaccia-style pizza and a patio with stunning Golden Gate Bridge views.

Sue Bierman Park

Washington St &, Drumm St, San Francisco, CA 94111

WHY I LOVE IT: SKYSCRAPER VIEWS, FERRY BUILDING FARMERS MARKET

If your kids love to climb, they’ll be all over the giant dome at Sue Bierman Park. This playground has a clean, bouncy surface and incredible skyscraper views that make it feel like a mini urban oasis. Just don’t forget sunscreen—there’s no shade here, and it can get toasty! Hats and hydration are key.

Bonus: Make a morning of it by starting across the street at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Grab some breakfast, a coffee, and maybe even a treat for later, then head to the playground to let your kiddos burn off energy. It’s the perfect combo of fun and food.

Helen Diller Playground

Dolores St &, 19th St, San Francisco, CA 94114

WHY I LOVE IT: ICONIC DOLORES PARK, PICNICS, ICE CREAM

Located in the heart of Mission Dolores Park, Helen Diller Playground is as iconic as the park itself. It’s a vibrant space for kids to climb, swing, and slide while you enjoy breathtaking views of the city skyline. The equipment is modern and fun, making it a favorite spot for families. For me, Dolores Park holds a special place in my heart—I used to spend weekends here picnicking and day-drinking with friends when I moved to San Francisco a decade ago.

Bonus: These days, I come with my son to explore the playground, but we still keep some traditions alive: stopping by Bi-Rite Creamery for an ice cream cone or heading to Kitchen Story for brunch and their famous Millionaire’s Bacon.

SF Zoo Playground

Sloat Blvd &, Upper Great Hwy, San Francisco, CA 94132

WHY I LOVE IT: PLAYGROUNDS FOR ALL AGES, SCENIC VIEWS, ANIMALS (OF COURSE!)

Set inside the SF Zoo, the Elinor Friend Playground features three distinct bio-regions, designed for a specific age group. Toddlers can explore a polar zone with iceberg-themed structures, while pre-teens will love climbing the impressive Banyan Tree structure. Each area is thoughtfully designed to match the environment it represents, making this one of the most unique playgrounds in the city.

Bonus: You’re already in the zoo! Take a stroll through the beautiful native gardens, say hi to the penguins, and spend a day connecting in nature. For my family, this playground is extra special—it was the first park we visited with my son after he was born, and it still holds many sweet memories.

Heads up: You do need to pay admission to access the playground, but if you’re local, a zoo membership is 100% worth it.

Bernal Heights Recreation Center Playground

500 Moultrie St, San Francisco, CA 94110

WHY I LOVE IT: SANDBOX, RESTAURANTS, SHOPPING, PASTRIES, LIBRARY

The giant sandbox is the main event, with plenty of structures for climbing, digging, and imaginative play. There’s also a flat, paved area that’s perfect for learning how to bike or roller skate. Plus, it’s conveniently tucked behind the Bernal Heights Library, so you can grab a few books before or after playtime.

Bonus: Bernal Heights is packed with great spots to shop and eat, making it easy to turn a playground trip into a full day. I love starting with coffee at Pinhole Coffee and pastries at Black Jet Baking Co before heading to the playground. And if you’re staying for lunch, there are plenty of options to satisfy every craving.

These are just my top five playgrounds in San Francisco, but there are so many more amazing spots to explore. This city really has it all. Did I miss any of your favorites? I’d love to hear about the playgrounds you and your family love the most.
